Google to discontinue social networking application Google Wave
Thursday, August 5, 2010 File:Google Wave.jpg Google has decided to retire the Google Wave social-networking service after one year, citing lack of user adoption. Urs Hölzle, Google senior vice president for operations, said in a blog post that “Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a stand-alone product.” Hölzle also said that as a “web app for real time communication and collaboration, it set a high bar for what was possible in a Web browser. We weren’t quite sure how users would respond to this radically different kind of communication.” Google says that it will continue the service until the end of the year. In May 2009, Google launched Wave as a private beta. A year later, it became open to the public. Wave is an email service that integrates social media features and capabilities into emailing. It…

Research In Motion financial probe becomes formal investigation
Friday, April 13, 2007 On Wednesday, Canadian BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Limited (RIM), reported preliminary fourth quarter and year-end financial results. Despite record profits, up from US$18 million in the same quarter last year to $188 million for the current quarter, the news was dampened by the revelation that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had formalized its investigation into RIM’s accounting practices. An internal review by RIM, initiated eight months ago, revealed irregularities with how the company accounted for stock options. On March 5 of 2007, RIM co-chief executive and chairman, Jim Balsillie, resigned his position of chairman, due to the irregularities. RIM had indicated, until recently, that the SEC probe into the company’s stock option granting practices was an informal inquiry. In a press release April 11, RIM suggested that “the informal inquiry has been converted to a formal investigation.” In its press release, RIM indicated…
Augusten Burroughs on addiction, writing, his family and his new book
Friday, October 12, 2007 I had an unofficial phone call from Gay Talese last Tuesday. He had just flown back from Colombia and he was cranky. “I’m happy to do an interview with you,” he said, “but what the hell could you ask me that’s not already out there? Have you even bothered to look?!” “Jeez, Mr. Talese, lots of things,” was my response. I lied. The truth is that when I call people to interview them, I do not have a set of preconceived questions. My agenda is to talk to them and gain a sense of who they are; to flesh them out as humans. To find out what they think about the world around them at that moment. With Gay Talese I had little interest in talking about Frank Sinatra Has a Cold and with Augusten Burroughs I had little interest in discussing Running with Scissors. I…
ACLU, Minutemen trade accusations of misbehavior
Sunday, April 17, 2005 Grey Deacon, a spokesman of the Minuteman Project, told the “Worldnet RadioActive” show in an exclusive interview on April 14 that representatives from the American Civil Liberties Union are now criminally involved in helping illegal entrants cross the US border and avoid detection. He alleges that the ACLU activists are making noise and flashing lights to alert potential illegals to move on to a non-patrolled area of the border. “The ACLU’s position is that illegal aliens have a right to enter our border and stay in this country as long as they want,” said Deacon. “That’s what one of the leaders of the group told me personally.” These allegations exist despite the ACLU’s officially stated position of not directly interfering with the Minutemen’s activities. The ACLU’s press release of March 30 affirmed that the participation of ACLU members would be strictly limited to being “neutral observers”…
