Wednesday, June 23, 2021 On Monday, Canada, the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom and the United States imposed new sanctions on senior officials and entities in Belarus over the May 23 diversion of a Ryanair flight and subsequent arrest of dissident journalist Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega, as well as “repressive practices” committed by the Belarusian government. The joint action was aimed at putting pressure on Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko’s “regime”, a joint statement read, citing “continued attacks on human rights, fundamental freedoms, and international law”, as well as the “politically motivated” arrest of Mr Protasevich and Ms Sapega. The statement went on to express support for “the long-suppressed democratic aspirations of the people of Belarus”, calling for Belarusian co-operation in investigations into the incident, the release of all political prisoners, adherence to the recommendations of an expert mission by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in…
Altered HIV a potential cancer treatment?
Wednesday, February 16, 2005 At UCLA, a team of researchers has developed a harmless version of HIV that is designed to seek out, and potentially destroy, cancer cells. In a laboratory-mouse experiment, the treated cells headed directly for melonoma and lung cancer cells, clustering around them with a surprising level of intuitiveness. Gene therapy for cancer has been at an impasse for the last 20 years, said the team, but now an effective carrier has been found in the most unlikely of sources. Essentially, one of the world’s largest health threats is now being considered to fight another. Says Dr. Irvin Chen, from UCLA’s AIDS Institute, “The disarmed AIDS virus acts like a Trojan horse, transporting therapeutic agents to a targeted part of the body, such as the lungs, where tumors often spread.” First the virus’s coating is removed and the virus is reprogrammed so that it recognizes and attaches…
US stock markets tumble on ‘Black Monday’ anniversary
Saturday, October 20, 2007 This article features in a News Brief from Audio Wikinews: Some say history tends to repeat itself. Today marked a day in history, when 20 years ago, the United States Dow Jones Industrial Average market crashed, on what is known as ‘Black Monday‘. The crash sent the market tumbling down 508 points, losing nearly 24%. On Friday, the Dow Jones nearly broke that record when the market closed at -366.94 points, down almost three percent. Several factors could be to blame for the loss, one being Turkey’s government approving a measure on October 18 to send Turkish troops into Iraq in an attempt to take out militants of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). This sent oil prices skyrocketing to the highest prices in history, with the highest record being just over US$89.00, which was set on October 18. Fears that the housing market in the U.S.…
Installment Loan Versus Line Of Credit
Click Here To Know More About: Div 7a Loan Agreement By Peter Kenny There are times when consumers simply need to borrow money. As most people know, there are many different ways to borrow money. Two of the most common ways are through either an installment loan or through a line of credit. Knowing the difference between the two can be important. One of the best ways to make your choice is to know which type of loan will best suit your needs. A line of credit offers most consumers a more flexibility type of loan than a installment loan. With a line of credit the borrower can take out funds whenever they are needed. There is no need to take the funds out in one lump sum, which is what happens with an installment loan. A line of credit, once it is approved, does not require the borrower to…
eBay removes Canadian town’s listing of sperm whale carcass
Thursday, May 8, 2014 Citing violations of its policy regarding “Marine mammal items”, eBay terminated an online listing on Monday by the town of Cape St. George, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, for a 40 ft (12 m) sperm whale carcass reportedly beached upon its shores about a week prior. With an initial asking price of 99 cents, bidding for the carcass reportedly rose to C$238.03 within 15 bids. Reports variously state the final price of the whale, prior to the removal of the listing from the auction site on Monday at about 2:30pm, was C$2,025 or C$2,075. Listed in eBay’s “really weird” category, the carcass was considered by eBay to be an example of “items made from marine mammals regardless of when the product was made”, which are prohibited as per site rules. Following a council meeting on Sunday in the town of 950 residents, Cape St. George’s mayor, Peter…
