Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines
Thursday, November 8, 2007 India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops. Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Afghanistan: More than 40 killed in explosions in Kabul
Thursday, December 28, 2017 Today, multiple bomb blasts at a Kabul Shi’a cultural centre, religious school, and Afghan Voice news agency killed at least 41 people and injured 84, Afghanistan’s public health ministry spokesperson Waheed Majrooh said. Saturday, February 14, 2009 Philippine fishermen, volunteers and authorities with dozens of fishing boats have joined hands in guiding back to sea about 500 disorientated melon-headed whales that were stranded in the shallow waters near the mouth of Manila Bay delta in the Bataan Peninsula. Fire brings down two domes of historical Russian cathedral
Friday, August 25, 2006 A fire broke out at the Trinity Cathedral in St. Petersburg, causing the main dome and another dome to collapse, early in the evening of August 25. Firefighters fought the blaze, and a helicopter was pressed into service. Staff, emergency service workers and passers by rescued treasured items from the cathedral. Four hours later, St. Petersburg emergency department spokeswoman Lyudmila Rubasova said the fires were contained but the remaining domes were damaged. Later a departmental spokesmen said that the fire was extinguished. “The main dome has been destroyed but we could not stop the fire because it was so high and now other domes are in flames,” said a spokesman for Russia’s emergencies ministry. Saturday, August 25, 2007 The leading supplier of school uniforms in the United Kingdom, Lancashire-based manufacturer Trutex, has announced it is “seriously considering” including GPS tracking devices in future ranges of its uniform products after conducting an online survey of both parents and children. “As a direct result of the survey, we are now seriously considering incorporating a [tracking] device into future ranges” said Trutex marketing director Clare Rix. The survey questioned 809 parents and 444 children aged nine to 16.
