British surfers catch more than waves: Scientists find antibiotic-resistant bacteria
Wednesday, January 17, 2018 In findings published Sunday in Environmental International, a team from Britain’s University of Exeter reports that surfers and bodyboarders are roughly three times as likely to house antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli and other bacteria that could easily become resistant, than other people who recreate in the coastal waters of the United Kingdom. The epidemiological study was nicknamed the “Beach Bum Survey”. The project was performed on 143 regular surfers, body surfers and bodyboarders from around the United Kingdom. Each surfgoing participant was asked to recruit a non-surfing friend of the same sex and approximate age and who lived in the same part of the country to serve as a control, which resulted in a control group of 130. All participants mailed in rectal swabs, and the researchers cultured the E. coli from those samples with a common antibiotic called cefotaxime. The antibiotic failed to kill the bacteria…
Curaçao wins maiden Caribbean Cup
Wednesday, June 28, 2017 On Sunday, Curaçao’s football team won their first Caribbean Cup defeating the defending champions Jamaica 2–1. Elson Hooi opened the scoring for Curaçao in the tenth minute. The defending champions were trailing the team ranked 70th in the FIFA ranking. Rosario Harriott scored an equaliser for the Jamaicans after a free-kick in the 82nd minute of the game. But within two minutes, Hooi, who previously played for Dutch football clubs NAC Breda and FC Volendam, netted another goal, restoring Curaçao’s lead. The match ended 2–1. In 2013’s competition, Curaçao did not manage to win a single game. Before Sunday’s final, Curaçao’s goalkeeper said, “Being in the final is a wonderful feeling”. He added, “But I must say, Jamaica is a dangerous team. They have no European players in their team and they are still in the final. They have speed, unity and physical players. So, on…

Scottish lawyer denies death of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi
Wednesday, October 21, 2009 A Scottish lawyer today denied reports that Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi had died, after it was reported on Sky News earlier today that “unidentified sources” had said that he was dead. The reports came onto Sky News at around 16.00 BST today. The information could not be confirmed, and it was not immediately clear where Sky News had obtained their information. Megrahi is suffering from terminal prostate cancer. Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Justice Kenny MacAskill MSP decided on 20 August 2009 to grant Megrahi compassionate release from Greenock Prison in Glasgow, Scotland and to allow him to return to Libya, after medical advisers reported that he was likely to die in just three months. On Wednesday, Megrahi’s lawyer, Tony Kelly, responded to the claims made, saying that “it’s absolutely untrue. He’s definitely not dead. I’m not saying anything about his health condition other…
Lobby groups oppose plans for EU copyright extension
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 The European Commission currently has proposals on the table to extend performers’ copyright terms. Described by Professor Martin Kretschmer as the “Beatles Extension Act”, the proposed measure would extend copyright from 50 to 95 years after recording. A vast number of classical tracks are at stake; the copyright on recordings from the fifties and early sixties is nearing its expiration date, after which it would normally enter the public domain or become ‘public property’. E.U. Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services Charlie McCreevy is proposing this extension, and if the other relevant Directorate Generales (Information Society, Consumers, Culture, Trade, Competition, etc.) agree with the proposal, it will be sent to the European Parliament. Wikinews contacted Erik Josefsson, European Affairs Coordinator for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (E.F.F.), who invited us to Brussels, the heart of E.U. policy making, to discuss this new proposal and its implications.…

At least four dead and hundreds of homes destroyed after week of wildfires rage throughout Texas
Friday, September 9, 2011 Parts of Texas have been scorched by sweeping wildfires this week. Officials state that a wildfire which swept much of central Texas this week destroyed at least 1,400 homes and forced about 5,000 people to evacuate to safety. An official with the Texas Forestry Services told news sources on Thursday that much of that fire has been contained. Officials have speculated that this fire alone has destroyed more homes than any other wildfire on record in the state. Officials are welcoming dropping temperatures, stating this will increase their ability to fight the fires effectively. A converted DC-10 aircraft was recently made available to fire authorities, but cannot be used until Friday as workers still need to time to prepare on-board equipment. One of the two fatalities in the central part of the state has been identified as Michael Troy Farr, 49, who died at his home.…
Head of US Minerals Management Service resigns following BP oil spill response
Thursday, May 27, 2010 After reports that US President Barack Obama has fired the director of the Minerals Management Service, Elizabeth “Liz” Birnbaum, the Interior Department revealed that she instead resigned “on her own volition”. The resignation occurred amidst growing criticism of the federal government’s response to the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion and the agency’s oversight over offshore drilling. Birnbaum, who became director in June 2009, was expected to testify before a subcommittee of the House of Representatives today with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. She was not present when Salazar began to speak, however. Salazar said in a statement: “She is a good public servant. She resigned today on her own terms and on her own volition. I thank her for her service and wish her the very best.” News agencies had reported that Birnbaum was forced out of office, and Obama was expected to officially announce the supposed firing later…
