Sunday, March 30, 2008 While nearly all cover of the 2008 Presidential election has focused on the Democratic and Republican candidates, the race for the White House also includes independents and third party candidates. These parties represent a variety of views that may not be acknowledged by the major party platforms. As a non-partisan news source, Wikinews has impartially reached out to these candidates, who are looking to become the 43rd person elected to serve their nation from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Wikinews’ own Patrick Mannion corresponded with the Socialist Party USA nominee and candidate, Brian Moore via e-mail.
Controversy over Liverpool fan jailed in Bulgaria
Friday, July 29, 2005 Michael Shields, an 18-year old Liverpool Football Club supporter, has been jailed for the attempted murder of a Bulgarian barman, despite another man from Liverpool admitting full responsibility. Shields, 18 from Wavertree was charged with the attempted murder of Martin Georgiev, 25, after being accused of throwing a brick at the barman’s head in the city of Varna, where he was celebrating Liverpool football club’s win over AC Milan in the final of the Champions League in Istanbul in May. Before being charged, a 20 year old man from Anfield came forward and claimed responsibility for the attack – Graham Sankey, made a statement through his lawyer David Kirwan. Mr Kirwan said: “Graham believed the case against Michael would either be thrown or adjourned after he came forward to make his confession.” Despite the confession, Shields was convicted of attempted murder. Fire kills six in Baltimore, United States
Tuesday, December 14, 2010 A fire in a two-story house killed six people — three children and three adults — in Baltimore, Maryland early this morning. The fire also spread to three adjacent houses. According to a Baltimore Fire Department official, Kevin Cartwright, the fire was reported just before 5 am local time (1000 UTC). Firefighters arrived on the scene and entered the building to extinguish the flames, however gusty winds of 30–40 miles per hour fueled the fire and forced them to exit. Cartwright said that once the fire was extinguished, firefighters reentered the building and found five bodies. Further searches revealed a sixth body. Cartwright was unsure of the victims’ ages or identities, but neighbors revealed that the occupants were an elderly husband and wife, their granddaughter and their three great-grandchildren. A neighbor, Karen Lane, identified the couple as Richard and Eleanor Satterfield and the granddaughter as Tiara.…
Malware from mass SQL injections confirmed by security experts
Thursday, June 5, 2008 Nearly 20,000 websites have been attacked by unknown malicious computer users using a technique known as an SQL injection. The attackers have inserted code to install malware onto visitors’ computers. The code exploits a newly-discovered weakness in Adobe Flash Player, a very common web-browser plugin. The attacks prompted an investigation by the Taiwanese information security industry into the source of these attacks. An SQL injection is a common method employed by malicious users to attack and deface websites, arising from website mistakes in checking user input. Attackers take advantage of these weaknesses to inject information of their choosing into the website. For example, in June of 2007, Microsoft UK found its webpage changed to a picture of the Saudi Arabia flag, an attack which was carried out using an SQL injection. Pope Benedict XVI heads to the UK amid protests
Wednesday, September 15, 2010 The Roman Catholic Pontiff is visiting the United Kingdom for the first time since 1982, when his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, was in Britain. The Catholic Church has been preparing an official visit of Benedict XVI for some time, with the visit starting tomorrow. The initial plans were made last September; the visit was only announced on March 16, 2010 when it was officially confirmed by the Vatican. The tour extends through Sunday, and includes stops in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, and Birmingham, at the latter of which the Pope is going to celebrate the Beatification of Cardinal Newman. When Pope Benedict departs from Rome Ciampino Airport at 8:10 am, he will first head to Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, to meet Queen Elizabeth. Sunday, August 14, 2005 Some cancer specialists have stepped up calls for smokers and ex-smokers to undergo advanced screening for lung cancer . They reacted to the recent deaths of Peter Jennings and Barbara Bel Geddes and the disclosure that Dana Reeve has lung cancer by urging people to have their lungs screened with special helical CT chest scans. Space Shuttle Discovery landing cancelled for today/Brief

St. Anthony Foundation provides hope
